Glee Season 6: Naya Rivera’s Santana Will Be Back — But With a Twist!
Whatever happened between Naya Rivera (Santana) and the producers of Glee at the end of Season 5 seems to have blown over, as the 27-year-old actress is set to return for the sixth and final season of the show!
Naya was abruptly written out of the Season 5 finale after what many reported was an on-set fight with co-star Lea Michele (Rachel), but we later learned that Lea wasn’t even on set the day the alleged altercation took place, and that Santana’s portrayer actually butted heads with the dramedy’s producers instead. Naya’s future on Glee seemed shaky at best (even though series co-creator Ryan Murphy insisted she’d be back) and now we have confirmation on exactly what her role next season will look like.
Per TVLine, Naya will be billed as a recurring guest star for Season 6 and and not as a series regular as she had been in seasons past. Apparently Naya requested this change and the producers honored her wishes. We’ll likely never know what happened at the end of last season, but we’re thrilled that Naya will be back for more Glee!
This is hardly the first time a Glee star’s contract has been modified. As TVLine points out, both Amber Riley (Mercedes) and Jenna Ushkowitz (Tina) were billed as recurring guest stars in later seasons. Both actresses still remain involved with the show, though their roles are smaller than they had been before the switch up.
Naya will likely have a smaller role in Season 6 as well, but seeing that this change was at her request, we bet she’ll be happy to have some additional free time to focus on other projects. No word yet on what Season 6 has in store for Santana, but we can’t wait to find out once shooting starts sometime in the next few months.
