Emmys 2014: Why Tom Bergeron Deserves to Win Best Reality Show Host
Yo, other Outstanding Host host nominees, we're really happy for you, but Tom Bergeron is one of the best reality TV show hosts of all time. Of all time!
This morning, the beloved Dancing With the Stars host was nominated for the 2014 Outstanding Host for a Reality or Reality-Competition Show Emmy, and if you ask us, there's no question that he should take home the prize. That's not to throw shade at his competitors — Betty White, Jane Lynch, Heidi Lium & Tim Gunn, Cat Deeley, and Anthony Bourdain are all great — it's just that he's a head above even the best of the rest.
Why? Here are three reasons we think Tom should take home the statue, like he did in 2012.
1. He's the perfect blend of charming and unobtrusive. A good host is someone you want to spend week after week with — but, especially on a competition show like DWTS, he can't take over the show. Tom Bergeron has learned to hit the perfect balance. We love him, and we can't imagine the show without him — we're pretty sure he's the only single person whose loss would ruin DWTS for us — but he never distracts from the main event: the dancing. He's just there every week, a comforting beacon of normality amidst the sequins and drama.
2. He keeps the whole crazy production rolling on time. Hosting live TV is a special challenge; hosting live TV when it requires managing so many big personalities is a whole 'nother ballgame. Somehow, Tom keeps the Dancing With the Stars machine rolling on time week in and week out — and he's so gracious about it, we never even notice when he's telling the judges or pros to please STFU because it's really time to move on.
3. He's hilarious. Best of all, Tom is laugh-out-loud funny without ever being inappropriate. He's mastered the art of throwing shade while still being the most likeable guy around, and for that alone, he deserves every award.
