R&B Divas L.A. Season 2 Premiere — Love It or Leave It?

The West Coast divas are back in action as the Season 2 premiere of R&B Divas L.A. aired last night, July 16, on TV One. This time around, divas Chanté Moore, Lil’ Mo, Claudette Ortiz, and Michel’le are joined by Grammy Award-winning vocalist Chrisette Michele and soul singer Leela James to round out the cast.

During last night’s episode, Claudette was given the opportunity to do a musical performance and promotion for a Puerto Rican tourism company, and wanted to get all of the divas involved. In telling Lil’ Mo about possibly doing the gig, Lil’ Mo breaks the news to Claudette that she and her husband, Phillip, are getting a divorce as she woke up one morning not “in love” with her man. Next, Chanté introduces Mo and Michel’le to Leela at Leela’s listening party for her upcoming fifth studio album. Claudette also attends the listening party and meets with Leela and introduces the ladies to her friend, Chrisette.

As the show progresses, we get some insight into the individual projects going on with several of the ladies. Things have picked up for Claudette since their Divalogues in Season 1, Chanté and Lil’ Mo have been booking more performance gigs, and Michel’le is gearing up to work on a new album as well as creating a suicide foundation, I’m Still Here.

During the show, Michel’le meets with Tony Cornelius, whose father, Don Cornelius, committed suicide in 2012. Tony has a foundation named after his father that caters to suicide prevention and care for those who have lost a loved one to suicide. Michel’le reveals she’s still healing from her own suicide attempt, and Tony wants her to help his foundation with a PSA. She agrees.

Later on in the show, Leela gets to know Lil’ Mo a little better and the two talk about the tiff the original four members had with the departed members from Season 1 (Kelly Price and Dawn Robinson), while Chrisette tries to sell her momager on the idea of an entirely new sound for her next musical project. Chrisette’s mom is a bit weary of the concept (as she fears record labels won’t buy into it), but ultimately agrees to help Chrisette express herself artistically.

The premiere ends with Claudette gathering all the divas at her home to ask if they would be interested in being a part of that promotional song for tourism in Puerto Rico. All the ladies say they’re down for the cause, but when Lil’ Mo reminds them of the last time the original four decided to do a group project with other people from last season, things didn’t go so well. Mo tells all the ladies to put all their reservations about the project forward now, so that they can start working together drama-free, but no one raises objections and the ladies shake on the deal.

While the premiere was pretty tame, the episodes to come look drama-filled. In the preview, we see Leela back out from being a part of the Puerto Rico project because of the “bad energy” she feels from everyone, Lil’ Mo calls someone evil and underhanded, and Lil’ Mo attacks Claudette for wanting to speak up. Also, Michel’le seeks help for her suicidal tendencies, Lil’ Mo breaks the news of her divorce to her children, Chanté’s upset at someone for hanging with her ex-husband (who she had a bitter custody battle with), and finally Chrisette says she never wants to speak with any of the ladies ever again. If you ask us, this season might be the spiciest yet but are you digging any of it?

A new episode of R&B Divas L.A. Season 2 airs Wednesday, July 23, at 10 p.m. ET on TV One.
