Jill Scott Talks Natural Hair: My Hair “Does Not Define Me” (VIDEO)
There’s plenty to love about Jill Scott: her beautiful voice, her amazing screen work, her always on-point style. But the No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency star gave us a real treat with a hair analogy that may make you seriously think about what it means to go natural in Hollywood.
During a chat on the HuffPost Live couch, the 42-year-old actress got thrown a pretty big question by the show’s host. “You are a hero for so many of your fans because you are a woman in this industry,” the host says. “You’re a body image hero; you’re a proponent of natural hair. Do you think it is the responsibility of women — performers, actress, songwriters — to pave the way for girls growing up?
Heavy question, right? Well, Jill answers it with her natural grace and candor. “I think it’s grown people’s responsibility,” she says. And when it comes to the hot-button issue of whether African American female performers should wear their hair natural or not, Jill has no interest in drawing lines in the sand.
“This is a hat,” she continued, pointing to her hair. “It’s a hat made of hair. It does not define me. It does not make me who I am in any way, shape, or form. It’s a hat.”
A hat that shouldn’t pit women against women. “I need young women, especially young black women, not to separate themselves because of this hat that you have on. At the end of the day, you shave it off, we’re still all black women.”
