In what is apparently a pretty controversial decision among musical theater fans, Girls star Allison Williams (Marnie Michaels) has been cast as the title character in NBC's latest live musical project, Peter Pan. The 26-year-old daughter of NBC Nightly News anchor Brian Williams is the second casting decision for the special, trailing Christopher Walken as villain Captain Hook.
“I have wanted to play Peter Pan since I was about three years old, so this is a dream come true,” Allison says of the role in an NBC release. "Besides," she adds, "what could go wrong in a live televised production with simultaneous flying, sword fighting and singing?"
The role of Peter Pan in the musical is traditionally played by a soprano, so we're not surprised that NBC is continuing the trend started on Broadway by Mary Martin — who also played Maria in the original production of The Sound of Music. But since Allison is primarily known for playing Marnie, a relatively vapid character with multiple cringe-worthy musical interludes, many fans are seeing a doomsday kind of scenario.
"'Who?' - Mary Martin FROM HER GRAVE," tweeted Business Insider writer Caroline Moss in response to the news. One Twitter user even joked that "the Darling children end up on crack in a loft in Bushwick." Way harsh.
While some maybe have a point thinking Allison had an unfair advantage given her dad's stature at NBC, we can't help but think many are reacting to the idea of Marnie getting cast as Peter — not Allison herself. Sure, Marnie's musical interludes on Girls are usually pretty grating, but girl has a great voice that hits the right childlike timbres. (Although EJ Dickson over at Daily Dot thinks it's not "booming" enough.)
Plus, she has that adorable, childlike wonder-face, and would look pretty adorable in a pixie cut.
Then again, Variety editor Ramin Setoodeh had a solid point when he tweeted, "Miley Cyrus was robbed." Still, we have some pretty high hopes for Allison! (Now, can we get Danny DeVito as Smee?!)
