The Walking Dead Season 5: Romance Will Be “A Reality and a Complication” — For Whom?
Love is a many splendored thing, but when it comes to The Walking Dead, just writing about it can get you as close to killed as the Internet allows. There’s a war out there, and it’s not between humans and zombies, it’s between shippers!
That said, showrunner Scott Gimple has already mentioned that another romance is coming in Season 5, apart from Glenn (Steven Yeun) and Maggie (Lauren Cohan). He said it back on Larry King in April, and he talked more about romance in a new Q&A with AMC.
The interviewer fished for some specifics, asking Scott, “You’ve mentioned a new romance evolving in Season 5. Is there any character in particular you’re hoping will find love?” Scott answered, “Love or romance is going to be an element this season. It’s not going to be an element in a huge part of the season, but as we get towards a specific part of the season, it’s going to become more of a reality and a complication. Human nature, all the good and bad parts, are things that both complement and compromise survival. Love is part of that.”
Uh oh. At some point in the season there will be a love complication? Love compromises survival? Does he mean — put down the sharp objects, Caryl and Bethyl shippers — Daryl Dixon (Norman Reedus) with Beth (Emily Kinney) or Carol (Melissa McBride)? Or maybe there’s actually some validity to the wild rumor that Ansel Elgort will join the season and potentially have a “thing” with Beth? (Still doubt that, but ... the door is open for anything.)
Or maybe he means Bob (Lawrence Gilliard Jr.) and Sasha (Sonequa Martin-Green), who were on their way to being Sashkabob in Season 4, but maybe complications will come their way, if they are separated (Sasha in trailer: “Where are our people?!”). Or maybe he means Abraham (Michael Cudlitz) and Rosita (Christian Serratos), who were already mentioned as a couple in Season 4, but Scott’s quote to AMC doesn’t specifically say the love complications fall upon a brand new couple.
What if …
*Comic book spoilers alert!*
… the complications are due to a piece of the comic book story that we never saw in action: the botched suicide pact of two teens. No? Scott did previously say they’d be doing a comic remix of a moment they skipped in the story a while back, so maybe they’ll remix the prison deaths of Tyreese’s daughter Julie and her boyfriend Chris. Just a theory. And obviously they'd have to find new characters since TV Tyreese doesn't even have a daughter. (He does have a sister, but they could choose anyone for a remix.)
Or, skipping ahead, maybe Scott means closer to the season finale, in stuff they haven’t shot yet. Once they get to the Alexandria Safe-Zone in the comics, Rick Grimes does get involved in a love triangle with a married woman, Jessie Anderson, who is abused by her husband. Maybe they remix that storyline in the second half? That would actually fit Scott’s teases pretty well...

What’s your take on Scott’s love/romance tease? Any ideas on who might be involved, and when in the season we might see it play out?
