ABC Cancels Black Box After Its First Season — Are You Disappointed?

It's a rough world out there for a freshman series!

ABC just canceled another one — Black Box, starring Kelly Reilly as a famous neurologist who secretly has bipolar disorder.

The show premiered on Thursday, April 24 and ran for 13 episodes, ending on July 24. The first episode took in 6.87 million viewers with a 1.5 same-day rating in the 18-49 demographic.

According to Zap2it, that's about half of what Scandal drew in the same timeslot. Black Box's numbers fell as the summer progressed, and the finale had 3.93 million viewers and a 0.7 same-day rating. If you include DVR playback, Entertainment Weekly added, the in-season episodes averaged 7.1 million viewers but only a 1.8 rating among adults 18-49. Apparently that’s not enough.

Black Box is not alone. ABC had 14 new series last year, Zap2it noted, and only three survived to see a second year: Agents of SHIELD, The Goldbergs and Resurrection. Head here to check out the current list of canceled or renewed TV shows.

In addition to Kelly Reilly, Black Box starred Vanessa Redgrave, Terry Kinney, Ditch Davey, David Ajala, Ali Wong, Laura Fraser, David Chisum, and Siobhan Williams.

Did you watch the first season? Are you disappointed that it won’t be back?
