In Season 5, Episode 11 (“No One Here Can Love or Understand Me”), Caleb finally let down his walls, admitting what happened to make him leave the supernatural town for good. In real life, of course, it was the cancellation of the Ravenswood spin-off. In the narrative world of PLL/Ravenswood, the explanation was much more poetic.
According to Caleb, he, Remy, Luke, and Olivia took all of the jars corresponding to the teenagers who had died from the curse over the years down to the river where Miranda died. They opened the jars, releasing whatever was inside of them — presumably, the spirits of dead teens. Though nothing happened at first, eventually, the woods surrounding the teens filled with millions of fireflies, which drifted up into the sky and then were gone. Mrs. Grunwald called it The Great Ascendency, and it sounds like the sort of thing that would have been cool to see on camera.
So, what happened to Miranda? “She was gone,” a broken Caleb explained. She disappeared — maybe to a better place, maybe to someplace else. With her went the nefarious spirits that were targeting Caleb and his friends. Of course, they linger on in Caleb’s guilt. He is afraid that he has broken his promise to Miranda, that — wherever she is — she’s not OK, and that one day she will appear in his dream and tell him that.
So, is this the end of the Ravenswood story? Hard to say. After Caleb had told his story, fireflies appeared outside the cabin where he and Hanna embraced. The Ouija board moved to say “Goodbye.” A final message from Miranda? A sign that, wherever she is, she’s OK? Or will Caleb’s time away from Rosewood come into play again? We’d like to have a chance to say goodbye to the other Ravenswood characters, but PLL has enough loose ends to tie up without adding its canceled spinoff to the list.
Marlene King previously told Zap2itthat she and the other writers hope to bring closure to the Ravenswood storyline, including possible appearances from the other cast members: "We've certainly talked about it … The [Ravenswood] kids are all fantastic and they have become good friends with Caleb, so it's certainly possible that they would come into his life when he returns to Rosewood." Only time will tell!
Did you think that was a fitting ending to the Ravenswood story? Would you like to see the other characters visit Caleb in Rosewood? Sound off in the comments below!
