Like a lot of Pretty Little Liars finales, this one dragged for a bit, but then paid off big time in the end.
We must say, the Liars' various cute moments with their "bed buddies" (as Mona put it) were sweet, but felt like a bit of a waste as we waited for the action to start. And we're sorry, but that fake-out with Toby's death was so obvious, it just seemed silly. We hope his broken leg at least turns out to be a plot point.
That said, everything involving Mona was golden. She is (or was, sob) such a rich, complex character with such a fraught relationship with the Liars; we loved seeing them work together. We love Mona getting things done, we love Mona and Hanna's friendship, we love that Mona knew Hanna would tell Caleb so went ahead and recruited him.
What we don't love? That Mona died. She was one of the best characters on the show, with so much more to give! This certainly ups the stakes, but the writers are going to have to work hard to convince us that this was the best move to make.
That said, we're very happy with the forward movement of the plot. We learned a lot about Bethany, Ali is clearly up to something interesting, even if she's not "A", and Spencer's arrest is a great cliffhanger.
We give it 3.5 stars.
