The Walking Dead

More of Gareth’s Story Will Be Revealed in The Walking Dead Season 5

We can’t call ourselves fans of Gareth (Andrew J. West) in The Walking Dead Season 5, but those flashbacks in the premiere did give us a taste (ba-dum-dum) of how he got to this point. As he told Alex (Tate Ellington), they put up those "sanctuary" signs because they wanted to do something good, because they were human beings. What are they now? Alex asked. Now they are The Hunters, who hunt and eat people.

However, there is more to that story to be told. The Hollywood Reporter talked to Andrew J. West after Episode 2, asking how much more we’d learn about Gareth’s backstory. “We will learn some more, and there are things that will be revealed,” Andrew said. “The process of revelation is gradual, but I don't think it's complete yet.”

Gradual. So over the course of several more episodes, not just Episode 3? In Episode 1, Mary (Denise Crosby) told Carol Peletier (Melissa McBride) how the group started as a real sanctuary, and in Episode 2, Gareth gave a big speech to Bob Stookey (Larry Gilliard Jr.) about how they evolved into cannibals to survive. Will Gareth share more details with Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln)? Will we see flashbacks to how Gareth took back Terminus, as he vowed to Mary and Alex that they would? Do you think part of Gareth’s story will connect to the hospital people, and the cars with the crosses? What secrets are going to come out to connect some of these dots?

The Walking Dead Season 5 airs Sundays at 9 p.m. ET on AMC.
