Madonna on Lourdes Going to College: “It Was Really Hard Letting Her Go”
She’s just like us! Madonna’s eldest daughter, Lourdes Leon, — whom she shares with ex Carlos Leon — recently went off to college for the first time, and believe it or not, Madge had a pretty tough time letting her go. The 56-year-old singer recently stopped by Australia’s Today Show to dish about her daughter starting her first year at University of Michigan.
"It's hard letting them go out into the world but when she left home to go to college I was a mess," Madonna says (via Us Weekly). “It was really hard letting her go. I've come to terms with it but yes, I miss her and she's a part of me. It was like losing my arm.” Aww!
Lourdes, who is also known as Lola, graduated from New York City’s LaGuardia High School of Music & Art and Performing Arts in 2014, and recently started her freshman year at her mother’s one-time college. That’s right, Madonna was a college student at U of M for a hot second, before dropping out in 1978 and heading to New York City to fulfill her music career.
In fact, Madonna hoped her 18-year-old daughter would enroll in her almost alma mater. "I keep telling her Ann Arbor is an awesome place,” OG Material Girl said back in 2012. Looks like mama’s wish came true!
As for Lola’s over-all feeling about leaving high school and starting college, it was a bittersweet moment for the teen. “[I’m] very happy and slightly saddened ... that my High School years are now coming to an end,” she wrote on clothing brand’s website, Material World.
“So many things that have been a part of my everyday routine for the past four years now suddenly aren’t and it’s weird because so much more lies ahead — yet it feels almost empty to wrap up high school,” she continued. We’re sure Lola is off making new memories now that she’s at college! As for Madonna, hang in there!
