Pretty Little Liars

Pretty Little Liars Season 5, Episode 18 — 10 Burning Questions

Another week, another Pretty Little Liars episode heavy on the questions, but less forthcoming with the answers. You know what that means, right? Plenty of burning questions for us to speculate about together!

Here are our top 10 burning questions from Season 5, Episode 18 (“Oh, What Hard Luck Stories They All Hand Me”).

What is Mike Montgomery up to? There are so many sub-questions to this question: Why is Mike visiting Alison? Who was he meeting, if anyone, out on that dock? Did he know that tape was stashed inside of Mona’s book? We doubt Mike Montgomery is “A”, but that doesn’t mean the answers to these questions aren’t important in figuring out what the heck is going on in Rosewood.

Is Holbrook really suspended? Holbrook’s complete 180 seemed to come out of nowhere. He went from department golden child to suspended in no seconds flat. Sure, he started exhibiting some creepy, creepy behavior along the way, but since when has that ever gotten you in trouble with the Rosewood P.D. (Looking at you, Wilden)? We think Holbrook may still be on the case...

Did Lesli come back to Rosewood for that tape? Lesli’s sudden return to Rosewood wasn’t entirely suspicious, but we couldn’t help notice the way she was clutching Mona’s book pre-tape retrieval. Did she come back to find the tape? Conversely, could she have been the one who planted it there for Hanna to find or as a pass off to the “A”-like figure we saw searching for it in the epilogue?

Who’s in the freaking barrel? Very little news on this front this week. We now know that it was Ali’s blood that was found by the barrel, but we’re not sure who — if anyone — was found inside of it. How long does it take to do a simple DNA test?! (Come to think of it, perhaps the P.D. should start getting samples from every Rosewood resident for the event of their future murder.) Also, could it be Alison or Alison’s twin who is stashed inside the barrel?

Who was Bethany Young talking about? In the tape found inside Mona’s book, we hear Bethany complaining about a lying b—h who manipulates everyone around her. The Liars assumed she was referring to Alison, but it all seems too easy, no? If Bethany wasn’t talking about Ali, then who was she talking about?

Can we trust the new kids? Seriously. Talia, Jonny, and Lesli may have won over their respective scene buddies, but that doesn’t mean we’re ready to start sharing secrets with them. At least one of these newbies has to be involved with the “A” game, right? If so, which one(s)?

Where are all the other parents? We know to have more than one Rosewood parental in an episode would upset the fragile foundation of the PLL universe, but seriously. People are getting murdered left and right in this town, and not a peep from the Montgomeries or the Fields. Get your acts together, Liars parents. Unless the Rosewood parentals are secretly the “A” Team and are always present just out of sight, controlling and surveying their children’s lives as some sort of crazy commentary on The Age of Helicopter Parenting. Guys, as far as crazy theories go, this isn’t a terrible one.

Did Jonny just build an “A” trap? A machine that records peoples’ secrets to later be listened to by strangers? Jonny has created the ultimate “A”-catching machine! (Even better than Mike’s infantile gumdrop trap.) This is probably giving Jonny/Ezra/this show too much credit and “A” not enough credit, but wouldn’t it be great if this secret machine was built with the express purpose of luring “A” out into the open? Because secrets are basically "A"'s Achilles heel/addiction all rolled into one. Just saying.

Will this Talia/Emily thing last? Talia seems very sweet, but we’re not super confident that this thing with Emily is going to last. So much is still unresolved in Emily’s relationship with Paige. As in: we’re very confused about what the heck happened. Paige stopped responding to Emily’s emails/texts/etc.? Whatever the explanation, we’re not sure if Ems is ready to move on. Then again, we totally love the way Emily has refused to put her life on hold for the “A” game and continues to take chances with her heart.

Could Hanna be “A”? Between those flashbacks, Hanna’s discovery of the Bethany tape, and the “A”-like way the Liar stared into that rear view mirror as she pulled away from Holbrook, it is seeming more and more likely that Hanna could be the mastermind behind this entire thing. Sure, it sounds a little crazy, but — at this point — what “A” theory doesn’t?
