Game of Thrones

Barristan Selmy Dies on Game of Thrones Season 5, Episode 4

Raise a glass for the fearsome Ser Barristan Selmy (Ian McElhinney), because one of the greatest fighters of Westeros fought his last on this week's Game of Thrones Season 5, Episode 4 ("Songs of Harpy").

This season has put a lot of focus on the growing unrest in Meereen now that Daenerys Targaryen (Emilia Clarke) has declared herself queen, and the untenable situation finally came to a head this week, with the Songs of Harpy flooding the streets killing former slaves and Unsullied left and right.

Why this week? It sounds like it's those damn fighting pits Hizdahr zo Loraq (Joel Fry) is always going on about. The traditional opening day of the pits came, and with Dany still declaring them illegal, the Sons of Harpy seized the moment to make their point. Listen, we hate the idea of people fighting to the death as much as the next person, but we're thinking Dany probably should have just given in on this one.

Still, she didn't, and the result is that both Grey Worm (Jacob Anderson) and Ser Barristan Selmy (Ian McElhinney) were caught up in a ferocious battle, and it did not end well for them. Grey Worm suffered many wounds and collapsed at the end of the fight, though we suspect he will live.

Unfortunately, Ser Barristan was not so lucky. He went out like the legendary fighter he is, taking on a dozen Harpys like a pro, despite being stabbed over and over again. We're not 100 percent positive he's gone, but he looked pretty dead there, and he looks dead in the promo for next week, too.

We miss him already.

Game of Thrones airs Sundays at 9 p.m. ET on HBO.
