Fitness Blogger Emma Murphy’s Domestic Violence Story Goes Viral

Emma Murphy, a 26-year-old health and nutrition blogger from Dublin, is adding her voice to the thousands of other domestic violence victims sharing their stories to shed light on the epidemic and to inspire others in similar situations.

In a viral YouTube video, the mother of two explains that she was in a three-and-a-half-year relationship with a man she says was the love of her life. Emma explains that this man cheated on her when she was pregnant — Emma only finding out after meeting the other woman, who was also pregnant — and the stress of the revelation sent her into early labor.

She says that she found out that he was still cheating on her last week, and that’s when he punched her.

“No man has any right to put his hand on a woman,” Emma says in the video. “Even once is unacceptable. But to be made to feel that it is acceptable is even worse. To be mentally tortured and told you’re paranoid or insecure .... no man should do that to any woman.”

She continues: “If anyone out there has gone through something similar to what I’ve gone through, you need to find the courage and get away from anything that’s as unhealthy as violence. Go to your friends and family, people who love you and care about you, and talk to them.”

Unfortunately, a lot of the dialogue in the YouTube comment section has taken a racist bent — since the child of Emma’s who pops up in the video appears to be mixed-race — but perpetrators of domestic violence can be anyone.

If you or someone you know is dealing with domestic violence, The National Domestic Violence Hotline can be reached at 1-800-799-SAFE (7233).
