Pretty Little Liars: 5 Most Heartbreaking Moments Ever
Pretty Little Liarsknows how to do heartbreaking, which is why we’re so worried about tonight’s episode and the moment when Aria (Lucy Hale) discovers that Ezra (Ian Harding) is “A.” In honor of that imminent and heart-crushing moment, we’re looking back at the five most heartbreaking scenes in Pretty Little Liars history — so far.
Haleb says goodbye (Season 2, Episode 9)
At this point, Haleb has said goodbye about a million too many times, but this season 2 farewell-for-now sticks out in our mind as a particularly heartbreaking one. Caleb stops by Hanna’s house to tell her the good news: he’s talked to his estranged mom and she wants him to come visit her in California. Hanna takes it in stride, happy that Caleb has reconnected with his mom, but sad that he’ll be a few thousand miles away. The two share a teary goodbye scene complete with an exchange of “I love you”s. There is crying.
Emily finds out Maya is dead (Season 2, Episode 25)
We dare you not to tear up when watching the end of the Season 2 finale. The Liars are returning from a long night of discovering Mona was “A” to find ambulances and police at Emily’s house. Em’s mom intercepts them to let her daughter know that they’ve found a body, and they think it’s Maya’s. As they roll the body by, Emily goes to pieces in Spencer’s arms. Poor, Em!
Spencer cries at Toby’s door (Season 3, Episode 16)
There were plenty of heartbreaking moments in Spencer’s spiral into darkness last season, but one of the hardest to watch has got to be the scene at the end of “Misery Loves Company” that left Spencer bawling at Toby’s apartment door, begging for him to let her in. Earlier in the episode, she had discovered that he was working for the “A” Team. She went to his apartment looking for an explanation, and when she got none, she fell apart. And so did we watching that episode.
Ezria breaks up (Season 3, Episode 24)
Given all that we semi-know about Ezra now, we’re really confused about our Ezria feels, but we know at the time of this scene we thought it was mega-heartbreaking. After the awkwardness that was the long-lost son debacle, Aria decides that she’s not happy anymore. When Ezra decides to turn down a job at the school because of their relationship, she decides to tell him the truth: “Nothing about us feels right anymore… It shouldn’t be this hard.” A heartbroken Ezra goes with it: “If you’re not happy anymore, you know that’s what matters most to me.” They love each other, but, right then, it wasn’t enough.
Paige and Emily worry that it’s over (Season 4, Episode 9)
Paily has had its ups and downs, but nothing as subtly and realistically heartbreaking as this dockside moment in Season 4. While some of the moments on this list have been hyperbolized by television, this felt like a real convo and problem that any teen could have. On Emily’s birthday, she and Paige take a break from her party to sit on a dock and talk about the future, mainly, about how they might not work out. The couple doesn’t reach any decisions, there may not be a solution here, but the way they face an unwanted side effect of growing up and moving one is heartbreaking. And we’re kind of wondering when this unresolved topic will come up again.
