So You Think You Can Dance: 7 Most Memorable Auditions (VIDEOS)

There have been 10 seasons of So You Think You Can Dance so far — and Season 11 starts tonight, May 28, at 8 p.m. ET — so that means we’ve watched hundreds of auditions over the years. We’ve seen a lot of solid auditions and even several great ones, but only a handful have really managed to take our breath away.

Read on for our picks for SYTYCD’s seven most memorable auditions so far (in no particular order) and tell us if you agree with our choices in the comments below. Here’s hoping one of the hopefuls from Season 11 earns a spot on this list as well!

So You Think You Can Dance Season 11 premieres May 28 on FOX at 8 p.m. ET.

Melanie Moore: Season 8

Melanie had tremendous presence from the moment she took to the SYTYCD stage, and she was an early favorite of the judges back on Season 8. Her audition was the perfect combination of strength, grace, and agility, and it’s pretty clear that everyone in the room was aware that they were witnessing something very special. Melanie more than deserved that standing O!

Stephen “Twitch” Boss: Season 3

Twitch has auditioned for SYTYCD more than once and we’ve been a fan of his moves from the very beginning, but his freestyle audition in Season 3 really stands out in our mind as one of the best in the show’s history. He had Mary Murphy laughing and cheering from start to finish, and Nigel boldly told Twitch at the conclusion of his routine, “You get two votes from me!”

Cyrus “Glitch” Spencer: Season 9

From Twitch to Glitch. Before his audition began, Cyrus said of the judges, “I’m going to show them what a robot anime popper looks like”, and that’s exactly what he did. Cyrus’s audition held the judges’ attention for more than three minutes and Nigel was quick to declare it “remarkable”. We couldn’t agree more.

Hampton Williams: Season 9

We love it when the auditioners introduce us to new dancing styles, and that’s just what Hampton Williams did when he showcased “Exorcist Style” during his Season 9 audition. Hamilton took the audience’s pain and fear and channeled it into a truly emotional routine that left the judges, and us, visibly moved.

Mariah Spears: Season 9

SYTYCD Season 9 was loaded with stellar auditions, and Mariah Spears’ take on krumping was truly unique. This little blondie may not look like a krumper, but that was part of her appeal. She showed the judges exactly what she was made of during her Salt Lake City audition and they were more than impressed. “You blew my mind,” Adam Shankman declared.

Aaron Turner: Season 10

Season 10’s Aaron Turner was the first tap dancer in SYTYCD history to make it to the finale, and the judges knew he was special from the get-go. In this snippet of his Los Angeles audition you can see just how powerful his moves are.

Ida Saki: Season 7

Ida’s Season 7 audition was practically flawless from the start. Her song choice — the theme from Schindler’s List — added an emotional depth to the already stellar routine that lead Nigel to call her “stunning”, and left fellow judge Tyce Diorio pretty much speechless. Don’t believe us? Check it out for yourself!
