6-Year-Old Killed During Joyride in Mom’s Car, With 8-Year-Old Brother Behind the Wheel

A tragic accident occurred this week in Phoenix when two children took their mother’s car out for a joyride. One of the youngsters, a 6-year old girl, died when the vehicle crashed.

NBC News reports that the boy and his sister apparently snuck out of bed and into their mother’s car late Wednesday evening. The two were still in their pajamas. The police began following the two when they received several 911 calls. When they caught up to them, they noticed that the car was driving erratically. As the boy tried to outrun the police, he swerved and lost control of the vehicle, running off the road and into a telephone pole.

Witnesses think that the boy knew the rudimentary aspects of driving, but became scared when the police began following him. Witness Ruby De La Cruz told NBC affiliate KPNX, "They were swerving into and out of traffic — into oncoming traffic — and, you know, the headlights weren't on, the windshield wipers were going crazy, so I knew they couldn't see too good with them going back and forth. It was crazy."

NBC reports that the girl, who has been identified as Aaliyah Felder, was not wearing a seatbelt, and as a result she suffered major injuries and was pronounced dead on the scene. Her brother escaped the accident with minor ankle injuries.

Investigators have no idea what prompted the children to go on the joyride. According to Phoenix police sergeant Steve Mortos, "The mother indicated that she has never seen or known of the children taking the vehicle before," he added, "We don't know why this happened."

No charges have been filed at this time, and police say there are no plans to do so.
