9 Things You Didn’t Know About Pretty Little Liars

We’ve been hanging out with the Liars on Pretty Little Liars for five seasons now, but how much do we really know about the show? Here are nine things you may not know about PLL.

Rosewood is Gilmore Girls’ Stars Hollow. Talk about a bipolar town! Many of the sets used as the murderous Rosewood on Pretty Little Liars were once used as the quaint Stars Hollow on Gilmore Girls. (Luke’s Diner is now the Apple Rose Grille!) After filming its pilot in Vancouver, PLL was part of a lottery of California-based TV and film productions to film on the Warner Brothers Studio set. Spoiler: PLL won!

Ashley Tisdale was almost a Liar. Are you ready for your mind to be blown? Ashley Tisdale, of High School Musical fame, was offered an audition for a starring role on Pretty Little Liars, but turned it down to audition for The CW’s short-lived cheerleader drama, Hellcats. Which Liar do you think Ashley would have been cast as?

Sasha was only 13 when the pilot was filmed. The core four of Liars are all well into their 20s, but not co-star Sasha Pieterse (Alison). When the pilot was filmed in 2010, Sasha was only 13! She remains the only Liar who is still a teenager. Currently, she’s 18.

Aria almost had a Buffy alum as a parent. We love Chad Lowe as the somewhat slimy family man Byron Montgomery, but we’re kind of sad that we never got to see Alexis Denisof, aka Buffy and Angel’s Wesley Wyndam-Pryce, as Aria’s dad. Alexis was the actor the Pretty Little Liars producers had in mind when writing the pilot. Aria’s mom? Rather than Holly Marie-Combs, they were considering Jean Louisa Kelly, of Yes, Dear fame.

The core cast could have been majorly different. While we’re on the topic of cast could-have-beens, let’s talk about these possibilities.

— Brant Daugherty (Noel) auditioned for both Toby and Ezra.

— Shay Mitchell (Emily) originally auditioned for Spencer.

— Lucy Hale (Aria) auditioned to play Hanna.

— Tammin Sursok (Jenna) wanted to be Spencer.

— Janel Parrish (Mona) originally auditioned for Spencer.

Ashley Benson suggested the theme song. Think The Pierce’s “Secret” is the perfect theme song for Pretty Little Liars? Well, you have Ashley Benson to thank for that. She suggested the song to the PLL producers and, five seasons later, we can’t help but associate it with our beloved show.

Troian Bellisario’s father is a famous producer. If the Bellisario name sounds familiar, it’s because Troian’s father, Donald Bellisario, is a famous producer. How famous? He is behind hits like Magnum P.I., Quantum Leap, JAG, and NCIS.

Ashley Benson and Lucy Hale met on MySpace. Lucy and Ash actually met years before their PLL days — on the Internet! They originally met on MySpace through some mutual friends, and met for the first time at a Disneyland birthday party. Check out this photo of Lucy and Ashley together at Ash’s 16th birthday party!

Toby and Noel were not meant to survive. The fact that both Toby and Noel are still characters on PLL is a testament to the oh-so-charming actors behind the roles. Apparently, neither character was intended to make it past the first season. Personally, we’re glad they’re still around. Even Noel!
