9-Year-Old Checks Out an Erotic Novel From a Local Library

According to Jeannine Deeren, her 9-year-old grandson was probably looking for a book about video games or cheat codes at the local Indiana library, but instead he checked out “Night Games” by Crystal Jordan. The erotic novel is certainly not suitable for a young child, and even includes a warning label on the cover, but because the boy used the self-checkout at the library, no one caught the mistake until he got home.

Needless to say, Jeannine was upset about her grandson’s choice in literature, but she recognized what she feels to be the cause of the mistake right away. According to Fox59, the Indiana library does have a suitable children’s section, but the inadequate signage and lack of separation between the section for children and the section for adult literature could confuse a young child scanning the shelves.

“This is what I did,” Jeannine said. “I went through three different people, filled out paper and then they sent this back.” Jeannine then read from a letter from the library addressing her plea to have books like “Night Games” removed. The letter stated that that particular novel has been nominated for several awards and that it’s the guardian’s responsibility to keep track of the types of books kids are checking out. It even states this on the paperwork guardians need to fill out to give permission for children under the age of 18 to check books out on their own.

“We encourage parents, grandparents and caregivers who don`t want their children to have access to certain materials to discuss how to use the library,” said Indianapolis Public Library communication specialist Jon Barnes in a phone interview with the news station.

However, Jeannine says she will continue to fight to have such books removed. She says, “There is a place for these books and that’s an adult book store. If they want to keep it at a library, I want them to keep it behind a door.”
