Ready for a preview of how Dance Moms' Abby Lee Miller might guest judge tonight's Dancing With the Stars Season 18, Week 8? This could get … interesting.
Abby talked to OK! Magazine a few days before the May 5 show, saying she has plenty of experience judging dance competitions, since that’s what she did before Dance Moms. "I come from a different perspective — one, as a teacher and a mentor I want to see my kids progress. I know these are adults but I want to see them progress to get better and to strive towards perfection. They’re just in it for competition. They’re in it to win it. They’re not here to be dancers for the rest of their lives. That’s something I have to take into consideration."
That’s actually pretty good to hear, so no drama yet. Asked for a standout this season, she said everyone remaining has been standing out to her, but ice dancer Meryl Davis "is absolutely exquisite. I have a hard time differentiating her from the girls who actually work for Dancing with the Stars. She’s that good. She looks like a former prima ballerina."
So she already has an eye on Meryl, but it sounds like she also has "history" with one of the judges. "I think I agree with most of [the judges] but I’m probably a lot tougher than all three of them. I know Carrie Ann through mutual friends in the dance world. There’s a little bit of history there. She always has such fabulous outfits so I don’t want to sit next to her."
Maybe Carrie Ann can throw some shade over Abby's way, if Abby gets too tough on the pros. By now, you may be familiar with how a few of the DWTS pros slammed Dance Moms and Abby Lee for how she treats her young students. They made the comments a couple of years ago, but two of those pros, Mark Ballas and Derek Hough, are still in the competition with their partners and will be judged tonight. OK! asked if this was Abby's chance for revenge.
"I think I may make them drop and give me 50! Fifty push-ups," Abby joked. "You know what, payback is a bitch. You never know. You never, ever, ever know. I teach my kids that all the time. We go to a competition, we check into the hotel, you get in the elevator, you’re in a restaurant. You don’t know who is judging the competition. You don’t know where they are or anything else. You always have to remember that if you say something negative, it’s going to come back to haunt you."
Well, that goes both ways. Abby has said plenty of negative things herself. In fact, back in 2012, when she was asked about the DWTS pros’ comments, she said, "You know, the criticism is from the dance community and they're all just jealous that they don't have a show." (For the record, Abby just got another new show, Abby's Studio Rescue.)
In 2013, Abby said she'd love to be on DWTS herself, not as a star, but to help choreograph a routine and design costumes or whatnot. She also referenced the pros talking "a little smack about Dance Moms," but she didn't want to name the pros, just joking, "I’m not giving that little skinny blond guy any more credit."
So we'll have to see how Abby handles her judging stint tonight. Will she go easy on the celebs but tough on the pros? Will she be all bark in advance but no bite on the show itself? DWTS has to be hoping for some fireworks, or they never would've invited her on the show, but how do you hope she behaves?
