Alanis Morissette: Home Birth Was “Beyond Pain”

While home births still account for less than one percent of the population, Today notes the amount of these types of births has doubled in the last decade. One person who opted out of the hospital route was rocker Alanis Morissette. Isn’t it ironic? Eh, not exactly.

The singer sat down with Jenna Bush Hager to discuss her experience, and, although she says she has no regrets, she didn’t mince any words about the pain. “The experience was beyond pain,” she said about delivering son Ever on Christmas Day back in 2011. “It was a transcendental experience. I just went to this whole other world. I basically had to be the little soldier that I am and really focus on this new beautiful creature coming out of me.”

Morissette credits her husband for making the experience bearable. “My husband was at my side the whole time, my total hero,” she said. “And the rest was really up to God.”

As for the decision to deliver at home using a midwife and a doula, the “You Oughta Know” singer basically said it was a no-brainer. “I didn’t really even imagine myself having the birth experience in the hospital,” Morissette says. “My home is like my little sanctuary.”

Morissette points out that home birth might not be for everyone, but, as she put it, “I think having it be an option is really exciting.”

During the same interview, Lori Walker talked about her experience with the home birth as a midwife, calling the whole thing “life-changing.”

There are some limitations, and, as Walker points out, home births are meant for those who are low risk. For instance, they cannot perform an emergency C-section at home. Once Walker said an emergency situation has been determined, they head to the hospital, noting it’s not an “out of the hospital birth at all costs” scenario.
