Alex Newell Opens Up About Playing TV’s First Transgender Teen
We're so proud of Alex Newell (Unique)! He was a co-runner-up on Glee Project Season 1, and we thought he would appear in his two episodes — as fellow runner-up Lindsay Pearce (Harmony) did — and bid the show farewell. Instead, he still appears frequently on the show! So how does he feel about his character?
Alex was interviewed by Frontiers LA and asked whether he feels pressure when portraying TV's first teenage trans character. "You don’t really have that pressure when it’s kind of an everyday portrayal," he says. "I mean, there’s still the struggle at the heart of it, but it was kind of like, this is another student coming in that has this journey they’re going down."
Alex addresses what the feedback has been like from the trans community about his portrayal. "It’s always positive and grateful, and in a powerful light," Alex says. "I’ve never heard anything negative from the community." And he adds that, even though he doesn't identify as trans, he has recently started incorporating women's clothes into his everyday wardrobe, saying that it just felt right.
It's great that Alex is getting such positive feedback from fans. And while we're worried that he might not continue to appear on Glee after the show shifts to NYC in a few weeks, we wish him all the best in future acting gigs!
Will you miss Unique if she's leaving the show soon?
