Thanks to a digital one-shot called The Walking Dead: The Alien, we now know what happened to Rick Grimes’s kid brother, Jeff.

The fate of the younger Grimes, first mentioned in the third issue of The Walking Dead comics but never on the TV show, was unknown until now. It turns out Jeff’s been in Barcelona this whole time.

In The Walking Dead: The Alien, Rick’s bro wakes up in the Spanish city and meets a local girl named Claudia, a museum curator. The one-shot then follows the duo as they attempt to return to the states where the American government is rumored to have found a way to contain the outbreak.

Per The Hollywood Reporter, The Alien’s co-author, Brian K. Vaughan, wrote in the afterword, “I'd been fascinated by the idea of Rick Grimes' long-lost kid brother ever since he was first mentioned waaaaaay back in Walking Dead #3.”

The site notes The Walking Dead: The Alien originated when the TWD creator Robert Kirkman wanted to publish Panel Syndicate's first venture — 10-parter The Private Eye, but Brian and co-author Marcos Martin wanted something in return — to create a comic set in the Walking Dead universe.

“It felt like the kind of fun, old-school comic crossover that never happens anymore because comics companies are owned by major corporations and there's too much red tape and hassle,” Brian said in an interview with RK regarding  the origins of The Walking Dead: The Alien.

The one-shot is available for download now at  PanelSyndicate.com, where readers can pay what they wish for the issue.

The Walking Dead Season 7 will premiere in the fall on AMC.
