Amber Portwood's father, Shawn Portwood Sr., passed away on December 16 after being placed in a medically induced coma, and now his son, Shawn Portwood Jr. is revealing the reason for his untimely death: addiction.

Unfortunately, Shawn Sr. was an alcoholic, and started drinking to combat his depression following the death of his daughter. Shawn's liver finally failed following his separation with Amber's mom in 2004, and he was ultimately told that he only had six months to live. Obviously, Shawn lived far beyond the doctor's predicted timeline, but his son wants fans of Teen Mom to know that addiction is what led to his death.

"Everyone knows of @AmberLPortwood's addiction and should know that ultimately addiction led to my father's death," Shawn tweeted, adding, "If you are having trouble with addiction or just feel that you need to make some changes in your life [then]] keep in mind it is #NEVERTOOLATE."

Though alcoholism was a contributing factor in Shawn Sr.'s death, Shawn Jr. tells Teen Mom fans that his dad was sober following his first diagnosis. "I also want to point out that although my dad did succumb to his previous addiction he was sober for more than 10 years and lived w/the pain," Shawn explained.

We can't imagine how hard Shawn Sr.'s death must be on Amber and her brother. Our thoughts are with them during this time.
