When she was on hand to perform at the Dancing With the Stars finale last month, Amber Riley (Mercedes) let it slip that she had another project in the works that was scheduled to kick off in July, and now, just a few weeks later, we think we know exactly what Amber was talking about!
It was announced today, June 2, that Amber has been cast in a production of the Broadway hit, Hair, which is scheduled to be staged at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles later this summer. Frequent Glee director Adam Shankman is heading up the project, which is also set to include Amber’s Glee co-star Jenna Ushkowitz (Tina) playing Jeanie.
Former Weeds star Hunter Parrish leads the cast in the role of Claude, Frozen’s Kristen Bell is set to play Sheila, and Entourage star Beverly D’Angelo will tackle the role of Mom. “I’m over the moon about the cast we are assembling,” Adam said in a statement via Just Jared. “The talent that I witnessed throughout the auditioning and overall casting process has been both mind blowing and deeply humbling. I’m in love with all of them. I can’t wait to get in there with everyone and rock the Bowl this summer, in ways that have never been done there before.”
For those of you that are unfamiliar with Hair, it tells the story of the "tribe," a group of politically active, long-haired hippies of the "Age of Aquarius" living a bohemian life in New York City and fighting against conscription into the Vietnam War. Claude, the main character, must decide whether to enlist or dodge the draft.
Amber is understandably psyched about this upcoming project, first tweeting, “O yea I forgot to mention I’m gonna be in Hair at the Hollywood Bowl. No biggie….. AAAAAAHHHHH I CAN NOT WAIT! Lol.” She later added, “I’m in the musical ‘Hair’ directed by @adammshankman at the Hollywood Bowl and playing alongside my sis @JennaUshkowitz mos def #Happy360.” Jenna added that she “can’t wait!”
Amber also spilled the beans that she and Jenna aren’t the only familiar Glee faces involved in the upcoming production. “And choreographed by my love @ZachWoodlee #Happy360 i’m on happy overload lol,” she later revealed.
Performances are scheduled for Friday and Saturday, August 1 and 2, at 8 p.m. PT, and Sunday, August 3, at 7:30 p.m. PT.
