American Horror Story: Coven — What Can We Expect From This Season?

If there’s anything we can count on from American Horror Story, it’s a bunch of terrifying and intricate storylines, and the third season, AHS: Coven, is poised to be no exception. With new cast members being added practically every week, we know we’re in for a treat...and probably some tricks as well. Here’s what we know so far!

Coven will premiere on October 9 at 10 p.m. ET and will begin a 13-episode run about witches and witchcraft. Intrigued yet? Just you wait.

Per an official release obtained by E! Online, Coven will take us into the Deep South long after the Salem witch trials.

“Over 300 years have passed since the turbulent days of the Salem witch trials and those who managed to escape are now facing extinction. Mysterious attacks have been escalating against their kind and young girls are being sent away to a special school in New Orleans to learn how to protect themselves,” the release begins.

We also know that the incomparable Jessica Lange is playing the Supreme witch, Fiona, who heads back to town in effort to help her kind. Sarah Paulson is playing her daughter, Cordelia, this season but it remains to be seen if she is a witch as well. Really, how can she not possess magical powers?

The season description continues, “Wrapped up in the turmoil is new arrival, Zoe (Taissa Farmiga), who is harboring a terrifying secret of her own.”

Elsewhere, Kathy Bates is playing Madame LaLaurie, “a Louisiana-born socialite living in the 1800s who moonlighted as a serial killer known for her involvement in the torture and murder of black slaves.”

And if that isn’t quite enough magic for you, Angela Bassett's character, Maria Laveau, is a “Louisiana Creole practitioner of voodoo who was widely renowned in New Orleans for her skills.”

The ever-growing cast also includes Denis O'Hare, Emma Roberts, Patti LuPone, Gabourey Sidibe, Evan Peters, Lily Rabe, and Alexandra Breckenridge. Comedian Leslie Jordan also confirmed via Facebook on August 27 that he’s joining the show, although no details about his character have been released.
