American Idol 2013 Predictions: Who Will Go Home From the Top 9?
The American Idol 2013 Top 9 stepped it up this week for their performances of the music of John Lennon and Paul McCartney. As Jimmy Iovine said before they sang, viewers were going to know if they made a mistake, as this is music nearly everyone knows. The pressure was on, and while the American Idol Season 12 contestants' overall Beatles knowledge was abysmal, nearly everyone had stellar performances...with the exception of two people—Paul Jolley and Lazaro Arbos.
Lazaro has really gotten in his own head and, by trying to focus so much on keeping the performance perfect, he has lost his vocal appeal in the eyes of the judges. Randy Jackson took no mercy on the singer, who was about to break down in tears, by saying it was the worst he’d seen from him. What’s interesting is Lazaro took to Twitter to give a short (under 140 characters!) explanation of what happened. As he tweeted, “On American idol you don't always get to sing the songs you really wanna sing I just hope to come back next week and show you who lazaro is.”
Paul did as we predicted and took on “Eleanor Rigby,” a poor choice considering what an amazing job David Cook did with it on season seven. He surrounded himself by a string quartet, and there seemed to be some sort of smoke effect going on around them. Between that and his uber cheesy velvet jacket, the whole thing came off like it was a joke. Nicki Minaj, however, wasn’t laughing. As she told him, it was “very, very safe, very bland, and forgettable.” Ouch, ouch, and ouch.
When it comes down to it, we think Lazaro has a bigger fan base and–let’s face it–one has to factor in the pity votes he’ll get due to his near breakdown on stage. In the end, we predict it’s the end of the road for Paul Jolley. While the judges have seen a lot of vocal potential in him, his performances have never shown them who he wants to be as an artist.
