The American Idol performances from the Top 4 finalists tonight will be a mixed bag of old and new. One half of the evening will be dedicated to classic “standards,” while the other half will be all about the modern edge with “songs from 2013.”
What will the American Idol judges do when they have to critique the ladies for their takes on music currently hot on the charts from a hit superstar? The comparisons are inevitable and some of the Top 4 are not going to stand up well.
If you’ve check out the American Idol spoilers for what the Top 4 will be singing tonight, some of the “2013” songs for Angie Miller, Candice Glover, Amber Holcomb and Kree Harrison were a bit safe in our opinion. There are a few interesting picks though, like “When I Was Your Man” by Bruno Mars for Candice and “Just Give Me A Reason” by P!nk for Amber Holcomb (although we wanted Angie to sing that one).
However, we have to say we were just bored by all of the “standards” selections. Amber Holcomb is repeating “My Funny Valentine” — a song we’ve already heard this season. Doing a song that’s already been featured is just pure laziness and lack of versatility in our eyes, no matter how well you do it. The rest of the “then” songs are equally as unimaginative.
Will any of the American Idol Top 4 contestants be able to take one of these tired songs and make it fresh again? We hope so, but we’re not holding our breath.
