With the rise of The Voice and the steady decline in American Idol ratings, you’ve probably been wondering if the former ratings juggernaut is going to be renewed for 2014. We were certainly unsure for a while, too, until Ryan Seacrest recently made the announcement about American Idol 2014 auditions which means the show shall, indeed, live to see another year.
On Monday, FOX made it official with the release of their 2013-2014 schedule, which included American Idol Season 13. The next season will air the same nights as usual, Wednesday and Thursday, and premiere midseason. The actual premiere date has not yet been announced.
We can’t say that we’re all that surprised at American Idol being renewed despite all the harsh criticism of the judges and the show this season. American Idol still brought in $836.4 million in ad revenue last year. And, despite American Idol ratings hitting record lows all year, that’s $100 million more than what the show brought in during 2011. We don’t know about you, but we can’t exactly picture Nigel Lythgoe et. al. walking away from that kind of coin.
Despite the faithful advertising money American Idol still receives, there’s no denying what a public backlash surrounded the show this year. Beginning with the leaked video of the profanity-laced feud between dueling divas Mariah Carey and Nicki Minaj, it seemed that the viewers were not having it this season. And, despite the top-notch talent this year, fans still seem to disapprove.
The powers that be certainly have their work cut out for them in trying to return for another season, as many seem to have turned on the long-running show. We’ve already offered up our five ways we think American Idol could make a comeback. As we all know, there will likely be a clean sweep of the judges, but we think the show could also benefit from changing the way the new panel interacts. They need a panel that all gets along (no more rivalries!), and they need to interact in a less formal way (a la The Voice).
How do you think could American Idol 2014 could return triumphant next season?
