Although American Idol ratings held steady on Wednesday night, matching their 2.9 rating in adults 18-49 from last week, it was still the lowest rated finale performance show ever for the series.
The ratings for American Idol's Season 11 finale performances show last year were way higher at 4.2. That's a huge drop and has to be painful for FOX, especially considering American Idol ratings usually go up quite a bit toward the season finale. This year, however, they've barely ticked upward at all the past two weeks, and were in a steady freefall before the Top 3 were announced.
Even with the terrible ratings, American Idol and So You Think You Can Dance still managed to win Wednesday night for FOX. The overall numbers in the sweet spot of advertising, adults 18-49, were as follows:
FOX: 2.6 rating/8 share and 9.337 million viewers
ABC: 2.0 rating/6 share and 6.374 million viewers
CBS: 1.9 rating/6 share and 7.941 million viewers
NBC: 1.6 rating/4 share and 6.334 million viewers
CW: 0.9 rating/3 share and 2.508 million viewers
What do you think – could American Idol get back to its ratings of old with a major revamp for Season 13?
