American Idol Season 9 winner Lee DeWyze is gearing up for a busy summer. Not only is his new album, Frames, due out August 20, but the guitar-toting singer is in the midst of a summer tour and will celebrate his one-year wedding anniversary with wife Jonna Walsh, whom he married last year.
Wetpaint Entertainment had the chance talk with Lee about music and his involvement with the Barefoot Wine Beach Rescue Project, an initiative launched with the Surfrider Foundation to clean beaches across the country.
Lee opened up to us about the inspiration behind his latest single, “Silver Lining,” his romantic anniversary plans, and whether he and Jonna are looking to start a family soon.
Wetpaint Entertainment: What’s the inspiration behind your newest single, “Silver Lining”?
Lee DeWyze: I think everyone has probably heard the term “silver lining” at one point or another in their life. It’s really about finding good and hope when you think there isn't’ any. And sometimes it's hard to see those things yourself, and you need someone to kind of take you by the hand and show it to you. It’s very much so about everyone's own personal battles of finding the hope, and not everyone can understand what someone else is going through. Sometimes you need that special person to be there to help you see your way through it.
You have a new album coming out soon.
The album is coming out August 20th and it’s called Frames, and over the last year or so we’ve been working on this record. Writing it was a labor of love for sure, so it’s good to know it’s finally done. It feels really good.
And you’re also going on tour this summer. What are you looking forward to the most?
The best part about going, aside from obviously seeing fans, is getting out there and playing new music. Like I said we worked so hard on this record, and to go out there and play just feels really, really good. We're gonna be all over the place. we're gearing up to go do that and we’re really excited about it.
You got married last year, are you thinking of having kids soon?
We have one child now, its’ a n 85-pound golden retriever, and he’s a handful [laughs]. But in the future for sure, definitely want kids. I want little Lee’s running around! My wife Jonna [Walsh] and I are really happy with where we’re at. we got married only a year ago and we’re just enjoying it for now. When that step comes, we will embrace it. Right now she’s focused on her career, and i’m focused on mine, and i’m focused on hers and she’s focused on mine, so there’s just a lot of that. July 21st, we're gonna celebrate our one year and it’s gonna be a great day. We're excited for it.
Congratulations! How are you going to celebrate?
We definitely got some plans, we're probably going to be traveling outside the country, which we’re excited about. She’s really the best, and she’s the best support system I could ask for. I love her to death. We’re gonna celebrate and go somewhere and have a good time.
