Although Adam Lambert came out shortly after his run on season eight of American Idol, Los Angeles City Council President Herb Wesson still believes his loss to Kris Allen was because Adam was gay.

As we reported, Adam was presented with the City of Hope Award by L.A. Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa during a ceremony at the City Hall (where he donned his oh-so-controversial new beard...no, not that kind of beard).

At the ceremony, Council President Wesson said, “I am a tremendous American Idol fan.” He went on to talk about the performance that sold him on Adam’s talent – hook, line, and sinker. “...that day that you, I guess, slicked your hair back, greased your hair back, put on a white tuxedo and sung Smokey Robinson … that was a phenomenal night.”

While he said Kris was good, he’s still calling foul on the loss, saying, “And the only reason why you didn't come in first, in my opinion, is because you were gay. And that ain't right. You should have won. It was a runaway.”

We’re still not quite getting this, as Adam didn’t come out publicly until he graced the cover of Rolling Stone shortly after his Idol stint. And, while there may have been murmurs about his sexuality, there certainly didn’t seem to be any definitive knowledge one way or the other. Of course, some have implied that he actually waited until after Idol to come out so as to maximize his female votes, but only Adam knows why he kept his sexuality close to the vest while on the show.

What do you think – did Adam lose to Kris because he is gay?
