American Idol season three winner Fantasia is living, breathing proof that fame can come at a price. As an article on eurweb.com puts it, her life “has been a rollercoaster ride of trails, transgressions and triumphs, much of she delves into on her fourth album,” Side Effects of You.
The singer talked about her new project as well as her demons in a recent interview with TheDrop.fm. In 2010, Fantasia was hospitalized after a suicide attempt that she attributes to the stress of her career.
“When I went into the hospital, I looked up artists who’ve been through things,” Fantasia told TheDrop.fm. “I researched other singers who have faced struggles, Aretha Franklin, Chaka Khan, Patti LaBelle, they all have stories to tell. I took my cues from them, and I just put my mind and everything into music.”
Fantasia has a lot to live for these days, as she is the mother of an 11-year-old daughter, Zion, and a 1-year-old son, Dallas. They give her a lot in return as well.
“My kids push me,” she explained in the interview. “They are my lifesaver. It was hard for me to be on the road when my daughter was growing up. My kids are the reason why I can’t stop. Because of them I have to live healthy so I can see my children’s children. They push me to be a better person.”
Fantasia knows that some are critical of her, but she chooses to tell her story for those whom she can help. As she put it, “If I can tell my story and help 20 people, then it doesn’t matter about the 10 people to my right who judge me. That’s my job. God wants me to inspire people. They can see what I’ve been through.”
The talented artist is certainly reaching a lot of people with her message, as Side Effects of You debuted at No. 2 on the Billboard 200 chart, earning $91,000 in the first week of sales. All she needs now is a competent person to take over her finances, so she can get herself out of her recent financial bind.
