Danny Gokey was quite a polarizing contestant on season eight of American Idol, as some thought he was milking his “sob story” in order to do well on the show. But no one likely realized the deep pain he was experiencing to his core while on the show that year, having lost his wife only a month before he auditioned for the show.
Danny, who finished third in American Idol Season 8, has opened up about the turmoil he felt at the time in a new book titled Hope In Front of Me.
While the ultimate outcome was, indeed, hope, Danny had to go through a lot of negative emotions before he could get to that point. The raspy-voiced singer, who was known for his geek-chic glasses and resemblance to Robert Downey, Jr., questioned his belief in God.
"It was almost like, at that point I doubted everything I knew about God, I doubted everything that I've ever walked [spiritually] for because you don't understand that me and Sophia, my first wife, we believed that God was gonna do a miracle and He didn't show up," Danny told those in attendance at the "New Voices Showcase" segment of the International Christian Retail Show in St. Louis on Sunday.
The book delves into that doubt and his pain, and he talks about losing someone while still so young.
"I don't know how many people have experienced loss here but I experienced loss on a level that most people don't experience at such a young age," he said. "You know I tell people I feel like I've lived a life twice my age of what I've had to experience."
Danny says God spoke to his heart even before his wife got sick, telling him he was to write a book.
"I had no idea," the singer revealed. "It's so cool how God writes the story. You can't see it and it doesn't make sense but that's why you've gotta live with the points of hope."
Danny also outlines his struggle with depression and anger over his first wife’s death. In the end, though, he reveals how he let go of those toxic emotions and came out stronger on the other side. He eventually remarried, tying the knot with model Leyicet Peralta on January 30, 2012. The couple's first child, son Daniel Emanuel Gokey, was Born January 21, 2013.
As Danny put it, "I'm not trying to be cheesy, but I talk about this in the book, your heart is your real set of eyes and if your heart is poisoned with bitterness you start seeing the whole world through that lens. And the more I started to let it go I had a new look on life.”
Danny also turned a terrible thing into a positive one by starting Sophia’s Heart, a nonprofit that helps families who are homeless. They helped 25 families last year and are on par to double that this year.
