Sometimes dodging an ex means turning down a judging gig on American Idol. Sean “Diddy” Combs reportedly passed up on the job when ex-girlfriend Jennifer Lopez signed on to make her grand return to the show.

According to Us Weekly, Diddy was in talks to join the judging panel for Season 13, but that as soon as JLo was a sure thing, he passed on the opportunity. Come on, Diddy — it’s been more than 10 years since you two were an item! Not to mention that he appeared on the show in 2011 to perform and help style contestants, plus he applauded her work on the show, saying her judging was "refreshing" and that she made him cry.

However, part of the issue may be that with Jennifer coming back, her manager Benny Medina will be around more often. That’s a sore subject for Diddy since he dropped Benny as his manager several years ago. The source says Diddy “felt it was a ‘her or me’ situation.”

Let’s put their relationship into perspective for you. They dated from 1999 to 2001. That might not seem like a long time ago, but that was back when Diddy went by Puff Daddy or Puffy. During their relationship, they had more troubles than the average couple — including a dual arrest in December 1999. They were charged with criminal possession of a weapon and stolen property during a "devastating" nightclub shooting in New York City, though Jennifer was exonerated while Sean was indicted by a Manhattan grand jury. They stayed together until 2011 (JLo notes they had an "ugly" breakup), and then JLo dated and immediately married back-up dancer Cris Judd.

Sadly, Jennifer then divorced Cris in June 2002 and quickly moved on to hot Hollywood actor Ben Affleck, thus beginning the "Bennifer" phenomenon. They got engaged in November 2002, made Gigli in 2003, and broke up in January 2004. JLo continued the trend of moving on quickly and married longtime friend Marc Anthony that June, had twins in February 2008, and then split in July 2011. Marc filed for divorce in April 2012, and since October 2011, she's been with former back-up dancer Casper Smart. Long story short? JLo has been in three relationships (married twice) since dating Sean. Maybe it's about time he got over her, though back in 2001, he did say he will always love her.

As for the show's future, Jennifer is joining last year’s returning judge Keith Urban, and the third judging spot is rumored to be going to hit-maker named Dr. Luke. Black Eyed Peas favorite will.i.am. passed on the spot, instead opting to return to The Voice UK. Only time will tell who will actually join the Idol panel this fall.

What do you think about Diddy reportedly passing on American Idol due to Jennifer Lopez’s involvement? Is he right, or should he just get over it? Hit the comments and discuss!
