This wasn’t the couple’s original plan, though. Not only had Kelly and Brandon already sent out save-the-dates to guests (it was suppose to be October 20 in Nashville, btw) but they’d supposedly anointed a maid of honor and lined up an officiant (Blake Shelton, not Ryan Seacrest). Plus Kelly just released a nuptial-themed music video that had us thinking she couldn’t get enough wedding planning.
So if so much was already in the works, why the change of heart?
“We are so busy that we finally just came to terms the other night and were like, ‘So, we change our minds and we want to elope.’ We just got so overwhelmed by it — all the decisions,” the 31-year-old singer told People.
To share the latest big announcement about their big day, Kelly and Brandon sent an engagement photo to their guests and “said, ‘Thank you so much for understanding, but it’s just going to be me and Brandon and his two kids and the minister.’”
At least this new plan will allow Kelly to catch her breath. The American Idol winner joins a long list of celebrities who decided to skip the aisle and elope — including funny couple Sacha Baron Cohen and Isla Fisher, who eloped in Paris in 2010, Kelly Ripa and Mark Consuelos, who tied the knot in Las Vegas one year after they met on the set of All My Children in 1996, and Gwyneth Paltrow and Chris Martin, who eloped in 2003 (not even Gwyneth's mom, Blythe Danner, was present!).
