After reporting that Dr. Luke would be joining Jennifer Lopez and Keith Urban on the judging panel for Season 13 of American Idol, a source has stepped forward and claims that the American songwriter and record producer cannot judge on Idol due to a conflict of interest.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Dr. Luke (real name: Lukasz Gottwald), signed a deal with Sony Music back in 2011 and if he was to judge on Idol, he’d be developing talent for Sony’s competitor, Universal Music Group, which poses a major problem.

An insider tells the news outlet that Dr. Luke realized that the job would eat up too much of his time. “He really loves his artists and wants to build up the label,” the source told THR. “Luke wants to build an entertainment company … after a lot of conversations, both Luke and Sony Music CEO Doug Morris came to the mutual agreement that taking Dr. Luke out of the Idol running was the best thing for all parties.”

If these reports are true, then the search is back on for the third judge on American Idol. Some of the other names that have been thrown out include Scooter Braun, Justin Bieber's manager. (He has a fan in Jennifer Lopez.) While he may be still in the running, Jennifer Hudson seems unlikely to join the panel, as does Kelly Clarkson. Bruno Mars, Mark McGrath, and Adam Lambert have had rumors attaching their name to the show but no official word. Meanwhile, Randy Jackson will have a new role on Idol, as a replacement for mentor Jimmy Iovine. If nothing comes together with finding a third judge, maybe Randy will just have to pull double duty?
