We know, we know. The American Idol 2014 finale won’t happen until around May 2014, but that doesn’t mean we can’t speculate about who might win the reality competition show this year. What we do know for sure is that something cra-freaking-mazing needs to happen after a few lackluster seasons with plummeting ratings. (To note: Even though Idol hit series all-time lows last season, the FOX show is still a ratings beast. It placed seventh after The Voice! in the Adults 18-49 ratings category.)

Ok, back to Idol 2014 winner speculation. Last year we saw R&B vocal powerhouse Candice Glover take all in the American Idol 2013 finale, beating out country singer Kree Harrison. Candice was the first female to win since 2007 (that’s six long years ago!), when Jordin Sparks, who was only 17 years old at the time, made Idol history as the youngest winner ever. This year, we hope for another female winner, since there have only been five female Idol winners in its run, as opposed to seven guys. But as far as we know, the odds are tipped slightly to the men’s side.

g to recent spoilers (above), Idol will have a Top 31 contestants instead of the usual Top 30 and that extra one goes to the boys! They are already highlighting Ethan Harris, who is yet another white guy with a guitar. That said, over the past five years, the winners’ list has more than a few white guys with guitars: Phillip Phillips (Season 11), Scotty McCreery (Season 10), Lee DeWyze (Season 9), Kris Allen (Season 8), and David Cook (Season 7).

Hopefully the pool of female talent is strong and diverse this season. From the previews, we’re already feeling the talented Marrialle Sellars, who has a unique and beautiful timbre to her voice. Harry Connick, Jr. told her, “Hey, you are going to be a nightmare for the other competitors!” At this point, we totally agree!

In one of the many glossy American Idol sneak peeks, glam judge Jennifer Lopez said, “It’s about something unique who just has some type of magic to them — and that’s, I think, what we’re always looking for.” Well, let’s see what kind of talent Season 13 brings!

American Idol premieres on January 15, 2014, on FOX.
