The American Idol stage isn’t just a place for current hopefuls to show off their talent, but a venue for established artists and Idol alums to show off their most recent music. This Thursday’s results show will be jam-packed as usual.
On top of finding out which of the Top 8 hopefuls will be coming to the end of his (or her!) Idol journey, Colton Dixon will be returning to perform a song off his new album, A Messenger. Considering Angie Miller performed his song, “Never Gone,” on the show a couple of weeks ago, we imagine the super popular season 12 singer will be excited. Perhaps the two will duet one day?
And Smash star Katharine McPhee, whose mother is a vocal coach on American Idol, will return to her roots to perform with One Republic. Their frontman, Ryan Tedder, will be co-writing selected songs with Kat on her upcoming album. The gorgeous Idol alum will lend her vocals to the group’s latest single, “If I Lose Myself,” off their just-dropped new album, Naive. This isn’t Ryan and Katharine’s first collaboration, as the pair teamed up on an episode of NBC’s Smash last season. The episode featured the song, "Touch Me,” which was written for Kat’s role on the show.
You might recall a controversy between Ryan Tedder and the original American Idol, Kelly Clarkson, a few years ago when she released a song that was eerily familiar to Beyonce’s “Halo”. Here’s the thing–Ryan Tedder was the producer on both albums, and apparently Kelly felt that he threw under the bus by letting her record a song that had already been done. Let’s hope Katharine fares better with the music vet! He hasn’t had any other unfortunate encounters (as far as we know) with the other Idol alums he has penned and produced songs for, including Carrie Underwood, Adam Lambert, Jennifer Hudson, and Jordin Sparks.
We've also just learned from Fox that American Idol judge Keith Urban will also be doing a guest performance on Thursday's results show!
We’ll surely be tuning in to the one-hour show on Thursday at 8 p.m. CT. Will you?
