Most American Idol contestants haven't opened for Of Monsters and Men, Gavin DeGraw, and the Backstreet Boys before they even arrive on the reality TV show, but 2014 hopeful Alex Preston is not like most contestants. (And for the record, he got that chance after his singing won him the starting slot at Boston's 104.1 MixFest.)

Alex, a 20-year-old student from Mont Vernon, New Hampshire, auditioned in Salt Lake City for Idol Season 13 — his tryout airing in the January 29 episode. He won the judges over with his original song, and he won us over with his denim outfit! (He wore denim again in the February 12 episode, when he was sent through to the Top 31!)

"Your tone is soft. It's nice, though," commented Jennifer Lopez. She also complimented Alex on his eye contact, saying that he made a connection with his audience. "I really liked that. I feel like that's the sign of a comfortable performer"

The judges also admired his guitar skills, and the way he employed advanced harmonies and even percussion.

Harry Connick, Jr. was still talking about Alex even after the audition: "I'd go see that guy. I'd watch him."

Alex even (adorably) called his biggest fan immediately after getting the golden ticket: "Hey, Ma? Hey, I'm on camera right now, but I'm going to Hollywood."

We'll see how well he does on the live shows. We've got high hopes!
