C.J. Harris is determined to find success as a singer. He's a contestant on American Idol Season 13 and sadly, his story begins with tragedy. His father recently passed away from a massive heart attack. "I see myself in him all the time," C.J. said in the January 29 episode of Idol. "It's made me a better man."
The 22-year-old traveled all the way from Jasper, Alabama, to Salt Lake City, Utah, to audition for the 2014 season — and his tryout aired on January 29.
Before he sang, though, C.J. prefaced his audition with humility. "It's an honor to be up here … This is my time to be here. I grew up listening to you, man," he said, addressing the judges as a whole.
Then the 22-year-old guitar teacher started his rendition of "Soulshine" by Warren Haynes, dedicating the performance to his dad.
"It wasn't perfect," Jennifer Lopez declared afterward. "There were things that you do consistently wrong, but we can fix it."
Harry Connick Jr. agreed with her criticism, but also said, "There was something about the entirety of what you are … You had my attentioned through the entire tune."
"You sing because you have to sing, not because you want to sing," Keith Urban commented. "And I mean that in the deepest of ways."
Keith thanked the judges individually, tears in his eyes — then came out of the audition room screaming. He kept the positive streak going during Hollywood Week where he made it through the February 5 episode.
On his official website, C.J. writes: "I like to connect to people by conveying my ideas through music and my voice. I'm blessed to say God has given me a true, intangible talent, and I want to take my talents to the highest level possible."
We'll see how high he can go on Idol this season!
