The X Factor has been canceled after three seasons and a head honcho over at FOX says American Idol is “winding down,” so why not launch a brand new reality competition show?

That seems to be the thinking in the conference rooms of CBS. Deadline announces the channel has a new project in the work and it’s headed by a veteran of the reality TV game: Nigel Lythgoe. The English exec, of course, is one of the originals behind Idol and has appeared on FOX’s So You Think You Can Dance?. He’s now planning to employ those same skills as executive producer of In the Spotlight.

The show has received a pilot order, according to Deadline. It’s based on a popular Turkish television show known as Keep Your Light Shining. Although CBS says their take is different, in Turkey the show features 12 contestants on a darkened stage. A spotlight moves around the circular stage; when it alights on one, he or she must start singing for 15 to 20 seconds.

The audience eliminates one contestant a round and, of course, there’s also a panel of celebrity judges to weigh in. Sounds a bit like musical chairs... minus the chairs.

In the Spotlight will be CBS’s first major venture into the highly populated (and some would say overpopulated) arena of music competition shows. Even without X Factor, FOX still has Idol while The Voice continues to reign supreme on NBC. Duets briefly aired on ABC, which will soon try again with new series Rising Star, also adapted from a popular international series.

Do you think In the Spotlight stands a chance or should CBS stick to what it’s good at: Survivor, Amazing Race, and Big Brother? Hit the comments!
