As we reported earlier this month, the American Idol powers that be have lessened their grip on the themes for Season 13 (hooray!). The show is going to “work differently with themes,” said the executive produces, adding that the series would also have an expanded song list.

We couldn’t be more thrilled about this shake up, because let’s face it –– Motown is an incredibly rich musical genre but watching a bunch of teenagers try to conquer songs from that era can be downright painful. We certainly won’t miss that or any of the other narrow, highly-recycled themes of seasons past.

Thankfully, American Idol Net has reported that the theme for this week is “This Is Me.” It promises to be broader than the themes we’ve previously seen, allowing these talented singers to show us what kind of artists they really want to be. The contestants will perform on Wednesday, February 26, then will learn who will continue on to the next round in a one-hour results show the following day. Rumor has it that American Idol will be cutting Thursday results shows down to a half-hour as of next week (March 6), although FOX has yet to confirm this.

The Top 13 is an eclectic mix of singers, that’s for sure. While Ben Briley, Caleb Johnson, Dexter Roberts, and CJ Harris all lean towards country and some classic rock, the others seem to be a good combination of indie, pop, and singer/songwriter types. We’d love to hear some songs straight off the current iTunes chart, like the upbeat ditty “Best Day of My Life” by American Authors or even Idina Menzel’s “Let It Go” from the Frozen soundtrack.

After the killer decision by MK Nobilette to sing John Legend’s “All Of Me” last week, we’re practically giddy to find out what she chooses for Wednesday. One can only hope that the super cool Jena Irene Asciutto will sing an original at the keyboard. She could easily meet or exceed the special moment that was Angie Miller’s “You Set Me Free” from Hollywood Week last year.

What do you think of this week’s theme? And who are you most excited to see perform? Let us know in the comments!
