American Idol alums are no stranger to hitting hard times after the show, and it looks like Season Six’s LaKisha Jones is the latest to join that unfortunate list.
The Idol finalist, who placed fourth on her season, is facing jail time and has been found in contempt of court, according to Minnesota news outlet MLive. The reason? She hasn't paid her father's nursing home bills, a duty that fell to LaKisha after she was named his legal guardian when he had a stroke in 2012. After the recent ruling, however, she is no longer his legal guardian.
LaKisha was $6,500 behind payments as of July 2013, so her father was involuntarily discharged and moved to another facility in Michigan. She is behind at the new nursing home as well.
While our first reaction was one of pity, as the $987 monthly payments of the current facility could be challenging for many of us to meet, the article notes her father gets a monthly Social Security payment of $1,047.
"I didn't steal my dad's money," LaKisha told the judge before the ruling. She says the Social Security payments went toward other expenses. "I was paying for his apartment and other things as well," she said. As to why she'd keep an apartment for a man in a nursing facility, she explained. "I never dealt with someone that was sick before."
You may remember this particular Idol alum returned to TV as a contestant on NBC’s And The Winner Is, a show that combined singing à la Idol and betting like on The Price Is Right. At the time, she said she hoped to win the $1 million prize so she could help her hospital-bound father move to Texas to live with her. Unfortunately, she didn't win.
As for LaKisha’s relationship with her ill father, she said after Idol, "He wasn't there when I was younger, but he's my father. If it wasn't for him, there would be no LaKisha."
LaKisha has 60 days to catch up on the missing payments or she faces time behind bars in Genesee County Jail.
