“I had so much to prove,” American Idol alum Candice Glover told The Hollywood Reporter of her nerves during her performance during last week’s show. It marked Candice’s first return to the show that had given her a jump start as the Season 12 Idol winner.
Unfortunately, we have to agree with Candice that she did in fact have much to prove with her appearance last week. Why? It’s all about the numbers. Remember, Candice’s release of her first single did the worst of any Idol winner in the show’s history. And while we think her recent performance was a good one, her album sales have been abysmal.
According to THR, Candice’s debut album, Music Speaks, debuted at No. 14 on the Billboard 200 chart, and sold 19,000 copies in its first week (ending February 23). Meanwhile, her single “Cried” peaked at No. 18 on the adult R&B tally.
This is the lowest debut for any of Idol winner in the course of the series. Candice comes in just below Season 9 winner Lee DeWyze, who sold 39,000 copies for his debut of Live It Up. Candice also took the longest to release her debut effort, having delayed its release date several times.
“Season 9, he was not a fan and he told me that I would be a lounge singer and I would, like sing in a hotel lobby and people would eat peanuts and turn their heads,” she said of Simon’s critique.
That strikes us as kind of harsh considering how great Candice’s voice is, but we can’t help but wonder if the music mogul might have been at least a little bit right.
