Well, we made it American Idol fans. We’ve officially arrived at the single digits for Season 13! Last week, we watched as the country said goodbye to MK Nobilette after she failed to overcome stage fright and deliver superstar performances. It was a hard hit, that’s for sure — not just because MK was talented, but because she made history as the show’s first openly gay contestant ever.

While it was tough to see her go, the show must go on! Tonight (March 26), the remaining 9 contenders will perform songs to the theme of “I’m With the Band.” They’ve been tasked with taking on tunes by rock royalty, as the live Idol band plays in the background.

First to take the stage is Alex Preston, who continues to make his mark on the competition by putting acoustic spins on popular songs. This time is a little bit different, however, as the indie singer isn’t exactly used to playing along with a band. The judges don’t seem totally thrilled with his version of No Doubt’s “Don’t Speak,” but there’s no denying it’s 100 percent Alex.

“I love that you’ve got your thing,” says Keith. “You’re so consistent. You have a particular sound and a particular style and no matter what song you do, it’s you. Having said that, I want you to give a little bit of edge somewhere.”

“You have your feet very firmly planted in this competition,” adds Harry. “So I think you can afford to do things a little bit differently.”

Do you think Alex deserves to make it to the Top 8? Sound off in the comments!
