Feel like you’re having a bit of déjà vu to last week’s American Idol? Fear not, because we promise you’re not going crazy! Indeed, the Top 8 of Season 13 are taking the Idol stage for the second week in a row after the judges used their one and only save on Sam Woolf.

Despite the oldest contestants in the competition being just 23 years old (man, we feel ancient!), the eight remaining hopefuls will be taking on songs from the 1980s. That’s right, these talented hopefuls have been tasked with singing numbers that were popular before they were even born!

Next to give it their all is CJ Harris, who’s been battling week after week to deliver consistent performances and stay on pitch. He decides to take on the classic “Free Fallin” by Tom Petty, which somewhat surprisingly blows David Cook away. “I’ve heard ‘Free Fallin’ more times than I care to admit,” says the mentor. “But the way CJ did it got me excited about that song again.”

While the performance is not without its problems, the judges also seem impressed by CJ’s raw rendition. “There’s a connection that you have every time that you get up there. It’s an incredible gift,” says Harry. “We always talk about pitch with you. When you hit the high notes, you were much more in tune. I’m telling you, you’re gonna get it. If you can hit the high notes, you can hit the low notes. When you crack that, you’re going to be really tough to follow, because that connection thing is the most important.”
