Let’s just put it out there: Last week of American Idol wasn’t the greatest we’ve seen so far. Sure, Harry Connick Jr. put an unexpecting teenager on his shoulders, but as far as performances were concerned, most of the contestants could have done better.

Tonight (April 16), the Top 7 will be taking the stage once again, and we certainly hope they kick it up a notch. Now that the one and only save has been used on Sam Woolf, there’s no room for error to keep the hopefuls from that dreaded elimination. We’ve watched as the contestants have chosen their own songs week after week, but this time it’s a first in Idol history. Tonight, the hopefuls have been tasked with choosing songs for the other contenders to perform. It could prove to be one of the most interesting themes we’ve ever seen... or it could go horribly awry if the contestants secretly tried to sabotage one another.

Next to take the stage is Alex Preston, who decides to go with Dexter Roberts’ suggestion of “A Team” by Ed Sheeran. There’s no denying that this is a sweet spot for the indie-loving Alex, but it’s also similar to the songs we’ve heard him sing on the show before. Will he be able to make it different enough from his previous performances, or will the judges critique his “coffee house” style like they did last week?

“It was a perfect, perfect song,” Harry says. “There’s great beauty in smaller performances. And I always question: Is that going to be able to win? But your conviction in that world is so strong. That was my favorite performance of the night.”

“You’ve got your signature things that you do,” adds Keith. “When you put them in songs, they’re so natural. When it’s chugging along like a cover song, suddenly you turn it into an Alex song, and then pull it back. You do it really, really well. That was great.”
