Let’s just put it out there: Last week of American Idol wasn’t the greatest we’ve seen so far. Sure, Harry Connick Jr. put an unexpecting teenager on his shoulders, but as far as performances were concerned, most of the contestants could have done better.

Tonight (April 16), the Top 7 will be taking the stage once again, and we certainly hope they kick it up a notch. Now that the one and only save has been used on Sam Woolf, there’s no room for error to keep the hopefuls from that dreaded elimination. We’ve watched as the contestants have chosen their own songs week after week, but this time it’s a first in Idol history. Tonight, the hopefuls have been tasked with choosing songs for the other contenders to perform. It could prove to be one of the most interesting themes we’ve ever seen... or it could go horribly awry if the contestants secretly tried to sabotage one another.

Next to take the stage is Sam Woolf, who — despite giving a pretty solid performance last week — still needs to prove himself after getting saved by the judges. Jessica Meuse chooses David Gray’s “Sail Away” for the 17-year-old singer, in hopes that her selection will help him tap into his emotions and connect with the audition.

“You are a work in progress,” says Harry, following the performance. “Progress being the operative word. You’re making progress every week. The biggest issue I have with this performance tonight was song choice. At this point in the competition, familiarity is your friend. It’s synonymous with connection. If you sing a song that everybody can sing along to, that’s what you need right now.”

"As I was watching you here, I didn't feel it as much," adds J.Lo. "But then when I would look down at the monitor, and see the close-up of your face, I really did see you trying to tap into the feelings. So in that sense, I think you did a great job tonight."
