We’re almost down to a handful of contestants on Season 13 of American Idol, which means the competition is the fiercest it’s been since we started back in January. Instead of the usual duet performances we’ve been seeing over the last few weeks, the hopefuls will be taking on two songs apiece. It’s sure to be an interesting challenge, as the numbers will be strikingly different from each other: one that’s a little bit country and another that’s rock ‘n’ roll. (Yeah, that was a Donny and Marie reference. Don’t judge us. It’s Idol’s fault.)

Taking the stage for his first performance of the night is Alex Preston, with “Animal” by Neon Trees. After a few weeks of hearing that he needs to get out of his “coffee house” routine, Alex is ready to show off a more upbeat side of himself. Unfortunately, it doesn’t land quite so well with the judges, but as Harry later says, Alex “gets a pass.”

“I just wanted you to release a little bit more,” says Keith. “It sounded like the band was on top of you. I know what you do and who you are, and I felt like you just weren’t quite dominating. But I’m looking forward to the next one.”

“You’re really consistent and you’re always such a thoughtful performer,” adds Harry. “It’s not safe to say you get a pass, but you kind of do because you’re so good all the time. It almost sounded like you couldn’t get your breath. But this is the first time I’ve heard you sing an upbeat tune. It wasn’t your best, but now I’ve heard that you can do it.”
